“As a black a girl, in America, there are times when we are confused even by comments from
others who look just like us. One cynical comment that has stuck with me was “you are white
washed.” During my freshman year, in high school, some girl came up to me and made that
statement. I asked her why she thought that. She said “I don’t know, you just are.” What made it
worse was the fact that she was black. I don’t blame her for such an ignorant comment. In fact,
I’m grateful that she opened my eyes a little bit more. If she hadn’t mentioned that, then I
wouldn’t have realized how confusing it is to be black. I genuinely think someone had to have
made such comments around or maybe to her for her to have said that to me. For all the black
girls out there, it’s ok to be confused. We have to learn about our true selves. We have to be
confident in who we are. We have to know that it is powerful to be educated and to know how to
code switch. To the girls who look like me, and sound like me, and are God fearing like me, just
know that you, your skin, your personality, your growth from day to day and everything about us
is beautiful.”
